Lateral Problems Empty Lateral Problems

Post by Ohtar Mon Dec 28, 2009 2:31 pm

So, since I am a firm believer that games help keep people checking the forums (although I wish it was just to see how things are going in the guild), and I think everyone is tiring of the current games. Here's a new one.

Rules: Everyone gets either one guess, or they can ask one "yes" or "no" question a day. If you miss a day you do not get to ask two questions just one. (If someone knows how to transport stuff from one player to another I'll start giving away in game prizes)

So, we'll start with a common one first.

"A man lives on the tenth floor of an apartment building and takes the elevator down to the ground floor every time he leaves the apartment, and the days he goes to work he drives the 0.5 miles to it. Whenever the man returns home he takes the elevator to the fifth floor; then he walks the other five flights of stairs, which he does not like doing. Why does he walk the last five flights of stairs?"

The current question

Elevator II

A healthy man is on the fifth floor, and takes the elevator down to the first floor (the ground floor) every day to go to the gym before starting the morning activities, but when he comes back every evening he is forced to walk from the ground floor to the fifth floor. His wife however, who gets back at the same time he does takes the elevator from the first to the fifth floor. Why then does he walk up the five flights of stairs?

@ Fal, than how does he ride the elevator to from the tenth to the floor level

@Xcapedeath I have a funny feeling you've heard that one before

@Shalafi yes he did get it.

Ok, time for one a little more difficult, but almost as common.

The lady and the bridge
I've been told this a true story
There once was a lady who needed to get across a bridge, but there were armed guards that kept post. The only time they were not watching the bridge is when they changed guards, and the changing of the guards never lasted longer then five minutes.
At a run one could it would take ten minutes to cross the bridge. Yet the lady was able to cross the bridge. How did she get across bridge?
*edit: The guards were under strict orders not to allow anyone to cross the bridge unless they had the necessary authority to do so. The lady did not have the necessary authority to cross the bridge.

P.S. using the internet is just wrong to answer these questions. Razz

She ran for 5 min and got half way. When she got stopped by the guards she said she came from the other side and was escorted "back" to that side.

ok, ok, that's two down in one day; maybe I've been too easy on you guys. Try this next one on for size. btw, I did actually figure this one out before I heard the answer.

There were two brick layers, and eight bricks out of those eight bricks one weighed heavier than the others. Not enough to tell by hand weighing each, but they had scale (the classic ones that balance out against each other.) The first brick layer challenged the other to find out which brick weighed more in just two measurements. To his surprise the second brick layer did complete his challenged. How did the second brick layer complete the challenged?

He divided the bricks into 2 groups of 3's, with 2 bricks remaining. Measuring the 2 groups of 3's he can deduce whether the heavier brick is in either group.
Case 1:
If the 2 sets of 3's weighed the same, then the heavier brick one of the two extra bricks. He then weighs those 2 extra bricks with each other to find the heavier one.
Case 2:
If the 2 sets of 3's weighed differently, he will take the heavier one and divide that into 3 bricks, and weighing 2 of them together. If one of them is heavier, that is the brick he wants. If they are the same, then the unweighed brick is the one he wants.

WIN.

Yes, and I'll have a new one up here shortly, like tomorrow. I'll have to make it a really good one.

The ground floor (like a underground parking garage I guess) doesn't have an elevator while the first floor (a lobby) does.
